Exploring the Long Mynd: A Wild Camping Adventure with Stock Footage from Ashlet Hill

Nestled in the heart of Shropshire, the Long Mynd is one of those places that captures the imagination of outdoor enthusiasts, hikers, and filmmakers alike. From its dramatic hills to its wide, sweeping views, this iconic landscape offers an incredible backdrop for nature photography and videography. Recently, I set off once again to capture some of the most stunning sights the region has to offer—this time, armed with a couple of new fancy cameras, and the mission to shoot breathtaking stock footage during a wild camping trip on Ashlet Hill. And now, the resulting Clip Pack #135 is available for those looking to bring the beauty of Shropshire’s Long Mynd into their own productions.

The Journey Begins: A Shropshire Landscape Like No Other

The Long Mynd, particularly the view from Ashlet Hill, is nothing short of spectacular. As I ventured out on this cold January evening, the weather forecast predicted gusty winds and cold temperatures—perfect for a wild camping adventure but potentially challenging conditions for capturing footage. Nonetheless, the promise of clear skies after a recent cold spell motivated me to forge ahead.

The trip started with a scenic drive to Church Stretton, where I parked at the Rectory Wood & Field car park. From there, I followed the trail marked as a public footpath to Town Brook Hollow, ascending the steps that led me onto the Long Mynd. As the weather cleared, the landscape unfolded in front of me, offering a glimpse of what would be the perfect location for filming.

Capturing Shropshire’s Iconic Hills

The Long Mynd is home to a number of striking hills, each with its own unique character. From the summit of Ashlet Hill, I had an uninterrupted view of Church Stretton and the surrounding Shropshire Hills. The camera was rolling, and the footage from this location captures the raw beauty of these landscapes—the sweeping views of Grindle, Ragleth Hill, Caer Caradoc, and The Lawley, with the distant Wrekin adding a further layer of depth to the scene.

One of the highlights of Clip Pack #135 is the collection of 22 drone clips. These offer a bird’s-eye view of the Shropshire Hills, capturing the vastness of the terrain in stunning 4K UHD. The unique geography of the area is on full display: the rugged hills, the rolling valleys, and the iconic ridges that make the Long Mynd such an appealing destination for outdoor adventurers and filmmakers alike.

Timelapse Sequences: From Day to Night

The weather turned in our favour, offering moments of dramatic beauty that would become the heart of several incredible timelapse sequences. Clip Pack #135 includes 4 amazing timelapse clips, all filmed during my time on Ashlet Hill, including a mesmerising day-to-night transition. The sequence captures the bustling town of Church Stretton beneath the backdrop of the Shropshire Hills as the day fades into night. The sky gradually transitions from a soft sunset glow to a stunning dark canvas filled with stars, while the town's lights slowly illuminate, adding a magical touch to the scene.

In addition to the day-to-night transition, there are 3 more night timelapse sequences—each offering a different perspective on the night sky above the Long Mynd. With stars twinkling overhead and the glow of a wild camping tent in the foreground, these timelapses capture the beauty and serenity of a night under the stars. As I filmed, I was reminded of how powerful the night sky can be in a place like the Long Mynd, where light pollution is minimal, and the stars feel within arm's reach.

Hiking, Camping, and the Shropshire Landscape

While the drone and timelapse footage provide breathtaking wide shots, the 71 tripod clips in Clip Pack #135 offer a more intimate look at the journey itself. These clips document the full wild camping experience—from hiking up onto the Long Mynd to setting up the tent on Ashlet Hill. The footage is filled with dramatic views of the hills, the ever-changing weather, and the quiet moments in between.

I’ve always found that the best footage often comes from the most mundane moments—setting up the tent in the wind, cooking a simple meal, or taking in the views. It’s in these everyday activities that we find the heart of outdoor adventures, and that’s exactly what the tripod clips in this pack capture. Whether it’s the close-up shots of heather, grass, and gorse, or the wide shots of the hills stretching out beneath a frosty morning sky, these clips tell the story of a solo journey through one of the most beautiful areas of England.

A Cold Night, Warm Coffee, and the Magic of Wild Camping

Of course, no wild camping trip is complete without some unpredictable elements. The night was bitterly cold, with temperatures dropping to -7°C on the summit and wind chill making it feel closer to -15°C. Despite the freezing conditions, I managed to get some stunning footage of the wild camping experience—my MSR Elixir 1 tent withstanding the 20-30 knot gusts, the lights of Church Stretton twinkling in the distance, and the peaceful solitude that comes with camping in the wild.

And while it’s true that wild camping in such extreme conditions isn’t always comfortable, there’s something incredibly special about being alone in nature, with nothing but the wind and the stars for company. This feeling is captured in Clip Pack #135, offering a glimpse into the rugged beauty of the Long Mynd and the adventure of wild camping.
